Women and Technology

The other day, I was watching the pilot episode of “Mad Men.” There is this one scene that related perfectly to our class. Within the scene the new girl, Peggy, is being introduced to new technology. The more experienced woman says to “try not to be overwhelmed by all this technology. It looks complicated, but the men who designed it made it simple enough for a woman to use.” Here is a link to the espisode:

The scene is about 10 minutes in. I couldn’t find just a clip of it on its own.

That whole show is basically “men who abuse women and the women who love them.” The attitudes are blatantly sexist, racist, and alcoholic. I think it’s fair to say that these prejudiced views are less overt today. But I don’t really know if it’s okay for us to ignore it because the show is set a few decades ago. Is a show like this discriminatory in itself?
